Candidates stump in two county races

Posted: Sunday, October 12, 2003

Some Columbia County voters will head to the polls next month to fill vacant political seats.

Five candidates are vying for the District 4 slot on the Columbia County Board of Commissioners, which became empty when Mark Devoti resigned to take a new job in Virginia. The district, which is the county's largest in area, extends south of Interstate 20 and includes the cities of Harlem and Grovetown.

One of the candidates, George James, resigned his position on the Grovetown City Council to run for the commission seat, prompting another special election to fill his vacancy. Two people have come forward to run for the city council election.

Now that the ballot names are set, candidates will be on a brisk campaigning schedule to get their supporters to the polls Nov. 4.
