The circle of new stores around the Evans Super Wal-Mart is getting larger.
Construction started last month on what will become an 11,050-square-foot strip center on Washington Road. The frame has gone up for the Shoppes at Evans, and nearly half the store spaces have been leased out, said Ann Davis, managing partner of Meybohm Commercial Properties, which is marketing and managing the development.
A local investment group, MMD LLC, purchased the 1-acre spot, next to the Evans Diner, 4429 Washington Road. The company bought the land in April for $450,000, according to county records.
"We've had good interest from prospective tenants for the property, and we feel that it will lease up quickly due to the excellent visibility and the close proximity to the Wal-Mart and the other shops," Davis said.

She said the building, which is scheduled to be finished early next year, will house between five and seven retail stores and professional spaces.
Three businesses already have claimed spots.
Although Davis declined to name the tenants, she described them as two restaurants and a communications store. She expects them to open in January once construction is complete.
With the Wal-Mart and the sprawl of outparcel stores as a backdrop, the site for the Shoppes at Evans development was picked because of the high shopping traffic in the area around the new commercial cluster.
"We're excited about new businesses in the Evans area," Davis said. "It's a growing area, and we just had lots of interest in our property there."
