Hits keep coming for ex-Evans slugger

Posted: Sunday, October 05, 2003

Todd Greene's 2003 major-league campaign is now in the books, and for the third time in his career, the former Evans High School star reached the double-figure mark in home runs.

Greene, who plays for the Texas Rangers, posted 10 homers in 201 at-bats. The right-handed slugger now has 52 career home runs in 1,089 trips to the plate.

In the four seasons where Greene had a minimum of 100 at-bats, he has managed 43 homers in 758 plate appearances.

That's an average of a home run in every 17 at-bats, which is a very impressive ratio.

Next year will be Greene's ninth in the big leagues, but he has never been able to record more than 300 at-bats in a single season.

Hopefully that will change in 2004.

If Greene does have 300 at-bats, I predict he will hit a minimum of 20 home runs.

Big expectations for Marshall

"He can catch it, shoot it, put the ball on the floor and make plays ..."

That is how the Wofford pre-season basketball media guide describes former Greenbrier High School standout Eric Marshall.

The preview also states, "The Wofford coaching staff couldn't be more pleased knowing Marshall will be in the program for the next four years."

Marshall likely will begin his freshman season coming off the bench, as Wofford's top two players man the slots where Marshall is expected to play.

Justin Stephens is a junior, and returns to the court after injury problems last season. As a freshman for the Terriers, he averaged nearly 13 points per game.

Greg Taylor starts at the three-guard position. The 6-foot-5 junior sat out last season at Wofford after transferring from the University of South Carolina.

The Terriers faced the most difficult nonconference schedule in the country last season. Wofford squared off with Auburn, Clemson, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, North Carolina State, West Virginia and Virginia.

The upcoming court campaign will be no different, as Wofford travels to Vanderbilt, Dayton, Minnesota, Tennessee and Clemson.

The Terriers tip off the 2003-04 season In Knoxville on Nov. 21 against Tennessee.
