PP&K winners

A local qualifier for the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition was held last weekend at Augusta Christian School. The winners in each age group were Allyson Lehi (girls 10-11), Andrew Douglas (boys 8-9), Christian Lane (boys 10-11) and Ben Morgan (boys 12-13). The winners from Saturday's event advance to the PP&K sectionals on Oct. 12 at Sweetwater Park in Thomson.

Softball tryouts

The Southern Knockouts, a fastpitch softball team for girls ages 14 and younger, will hold tryouts Oct. 11 at Patriots Park softball complex. The tryouts are from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information contact Rick Givens at 854-8763.

Baseball showcase

The 2003 Southern Prospect Baseball Showcase is scheduled Oct. 25 and 26 at Patriots Park. The showcase is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26. The showcase is for players ages 13-15, and the cost to participate is $165 per player. Activities include a pro workout session, a clinic, showcase games and scouting for the USA National Team.

The deadline for registration is Oct. 19. Forms can be picked up at the Columbia County Recreation Department office. For more information contact Mike Brodhecker (863-7523 or 825-3285) or Kenny Wilkinson (843-552-3243).

Hall of Fame award

The Columbia County Recreation Advisory Board is presently accepting applications for the third annual Columbia County Recreation and Leisure Services Department Hall of Fame Award. Applications will be accepted until Oct. 30.

The Recreation and Leisure Services Department will receive one or two individuals, groups or businesses for induction, whom have either come through the program or had direct impact on the department. Inductees each year will be enshrined with a picture and plaque of their accomplishments placed at Patriots Park Gymnasium Complex.

Nominations may be made from the general public, the Recreation Advisory Board or the Recreation staff. People submitting nominations must provide a typed page bio on the individual, group or business. Nominations must be typed with 12-point type and double-spaced. The Recreation Advisory Board will review all applications and select one or two inductees at its November meeting.

People must meet the following criteria for induction: the individual must have played, coached or worked with the department at least four years; individual must have made a direct impact on the recreation program, while either playing, coaching or working with the department; individuals that have participated within the program must have gone on to establish themselves in an outstanding way; a business or group must have had a direct impact on a specific program or the department for at least five consecutive years; and, a meritorious nomination may be made with approval of the Recreation Advisory Board and the Columbia County Board of Commissioners.
