Evans grad seeks title of Miss America

Wearing the Miss Georgia sash, former Columbia County resident Andrea Bailey will join 50 other women competing Saturday in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J.

Bailey, a 1997 Evans High School graduate, has spent the past several months in Columbus, Ga., which is the headquarters for the Miss Georgia pageant, to prepare for this weekend's charge for the national crown.

She is a graduate of Georgia State University with a bachelor of music in sound engineering and now works for Clear Channel Radio in Savannah.

The 24-year-old's parent's, Stan and Janet Bailey, still live in Evans.

Bailey is a former Miss Augusta, Miss South Georgia, Miss Northeast Georgia, Miss Coastal Georgia and Miss Savannah.

This is the 83rd year of the nation's oldest beauty - turned scholarship - pageant. A new casualwear competition was added this year to the schedule of talent, eveningwear and swimwear categories in which the finalists compete.

A live broadcast of the pageant will air Saturday at 8 p.m. on ABC's WJBF-TV (Channel 6).
