The following accounts were taken from reports filed with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Walker harassed

A Martinez man told police he was threatened while walking on Columbia Road on Thursday night.

Andrew Scott Haley, 20, of Martinez, was walking along the eastbound shoulder of Columbia Road near Reed Creek Road just before midnight Thursday when a red Jeep Cherokee carrying several males pulled over next to him and began harassing him, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office report.

Haley told deputies that when he asked the men to leave him alone, one of them said he was going to go home to get his .45-caliber pistol and shoot Haley, the report stated.

Deputies found no suspects during a search of the area.

Dining-room brawl

A fight at an Evans restaurant left one teenage boy beaten and a man intending to prosecute a teenage girl who hit him during the melee.

A 17-year-old Martinez teen told deputies that while he was at the Hibachi Bar and Grill, 4272 Washington Road in Evans, someone hit him in the face. When he tried to defend himself, several other men began hitting and kicking him, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office report.

A witness said he saw a fight break out near the restaurant's dance floor, and the fight spilled outside. The witness told deputies that one man said he had a gun and then left, the report stated.

Charles Steven Fernandes, 23, of Lincolnton, said that when he tried to break up the fight, a 17-year-old girl hit him on the back of his head, the report stated. The female teen told police that several men were hitting the teen-age boy and she was trying to pull Fernandes off him, the report stated.

Deputies noted visible scratches on the teenage boy's knees and elbows. The boy said he wants to prosecute any of the men if they are identified, according to the report. Fernandes said he wants to prosecute the teen-age girl for hitting him, the report stated.

Pool assault

A woman told deputies she was sexually assaulted at the pool in her apartment complex Sept. 2.

A 19-year-old Martinez woman told police she was swimming in the pool at Ridge Crossing Apartments when she was approached by a man with whom she began talking and splashing around with, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office report. She said the water play got rough when he started throwing her around the pool and would not let her go, the report stated.

The woman told the man to stop and kicked him in the groin several times. The police reported stated that the man began groping her and grabbing at her swimsuit.

The woman, who yelled at one point, gave the man several excuses about needing to call her boss, and the man let her go, the report stated.

Deputies attempted to locate the man at an apartment in the complex, but did not find him. They found him later in the day and obtained a written statement.

There were no visible marks of the struggle, but the woman told police that she wishes to prosecute, the report stated.

Shoplifting with a baby

A recent shoplifter at the Martinez Dollar General store used a baby as a prop.

Robin Barnard Shipley, the manager of the store at 210 Bobby Jones Expressway, told deputies that a man and a woman entered the store Thursday afternoon with a baby and a large diaper bag, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office report. The woman was suspected of placing items in the diaper bag while she shopped, the report stated.

When Shipley attempted to confront the pair, they quickly left the shopping center in a white Pontiac Grand Am, the report stated. A second man was waiting for the couple in the car.

Shipley gave police the car's license plate number, but deputies could not reach the car's owner, according to the report.
