The Martinez-Evans Sting, a fast-pitch softball team for players age 14 and under, has two player openings this fall for the 2003-04 season. The team expects to compete in 12-15 travel tournaments from October through July. Highly-skilled, committed athletes can contact coach Jerry Wuchte at 868-9614 for tryout information. The tryouts are open to Georgia and South Carolina players.
Memorial golf tournament
The 10th annual Bert Yancey Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Oct. 13 at Mount Vintage Golf Club. Proceeds benefit the Mental Health Association of Greater Augusta, local affiliates of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and Depression and Bipolar Supportive Alliance of Greater Augusta. Participants will be treated to greens fees; carts; range balls; a box lunch; beverages on the course; a buffet dinner; par-3, long-drive and putting contests; a chance to win a new car; a silent auction; and more.
Although intended as an amateur event, professionals will be allowed to play but will not be eligible for specialty-hole events. Team cost is $600, and individual player cost is $150. The format is Lauderdale, with four-person teams. Registration is 10 a.m. on the day of the tournament, which will feature a shotgun start at noon. Entries for players are accepted until the start of the tournament.
