Theatre troupe gets 'Smart'

Posted: Sunday, July 27, 2003

Get Smart, a play based on the popular TV comedy of the 1960s, will be presented by the Young Artists Repertory Theatre Company.

Four performances will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and Saturday, Aug. 2, and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3, in the Goodwin Commons at Augusta Preparatory Day School.

The play expands upon the spy spoof's first two episodes, Mr. Big and Diplomat's Daughter, which introduced the bumbling Control agent Maxwell Smart, the chic Agent 99 and their chief. The play is a comedy in which Max and 99 battle evil Mr. Big of KAOS, who is intent on stealing Professor Dante's "Intermo," a devise with massive destructive powers.

Jade Hawk plays spy Maxwell Smart alongside Bree Borke in the Young Artists Repertory Theatre production of Get Smart. The play will run Aug. 3-5 at the Augusta Prep auditorium.

Get Smart is the theater group's fifth production and features a cast of 25 people ages 10-20. Jade Hawk is Max, Emily Greene is 99 and Cameron Brune plays the chief. Others in the cast include Patrick Reagan as Mr. Big, Stephanie Ahmadipour as Miss Finch, Mark Brown as Garth and Taylor Roy as Professor Dante.

Fans of the show will be pleased to see the gadgets featured in the show, such as Max's shoe phone, and the many catch phrases created on Get Smart, such as "Would you believe ...," which was generally followed by an outlandish claim by Smart.

The play will be directed by John Greene, who is the theater group's founder and artistic director. The group involves pupils in every aspect of the production.
