Organizers postpone Family Fun Weekend

Posted: Wednesday, July 23, 2003

The Wildwood Family Fun Weekend hasn't been canceled, only postponed.

What would have been the fourth annual event, originally scheduled for next week, was postponed because of excessive heat and rain. Severe weather this spring knocked down trees and flooded some low-lying areas in Wildwood Park, said Beth Roberson, special-events coordinator for the Columbia County Recreation Department.

Organizers are hoping to reschedule the event for September or October.

"It was postponed to a better time of year," Roberson said. "Wildwood would be in better shape and it would not be so hot and we would have more staffing for several reasons."

Staffing was a problem because of the event's proximity to the county's Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebrations.

Since organizers have more time, they are collaborating with several local business, including Andy Jordan's Bicycle Warehouse.

The event was sponsored by Publix in recent years, but this year's event will be sponsored by the county recreation department and local businesses.

According to Roberson, the event will feature mountain-biking competitions, disc golf, canoe and kayak demonstrations and lots of food and family fun.
