Scholarship winner

Rachel M. Aderholt of North Augusta recently accepted the Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Rachel plans to attend Salem College and major in English/writing/education.

Lori Grove, a graduate of Evans High School and daughter of Dennis and Anita Grove of Martinez, has received a UPS scholarship from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, Athens.

Agnes Scott grads

The following area residents have earned degrees from Agnes Scott College, Atlanta: Melva N. Lowry,Augusta, Bachelor of Arts in political sociology; Chanika Renee Perry,Hephzibah, magna cum laude, Bachelor of Arts in English; and Tayyeba Ahmad, Martinez, magna cum laude, Bachelor of Arts in English Literature-creative writing.

Essay winners Westminster Schools of Augusta pupils McCamy Pruitt and Catherine Stebbins have received first-place honors in the 2003 Sacred Heart Emily S. Cleckley Student Competition for their respective elementary-school and middle-school essays. Also, Lauren McGahee placed second, while her sister, Megan McGahee, received honorable mention in the same category.

Wake Forest dean's list

Levi Anderson Pollard of Appling made the Wake Forest University dean's list for spring semester. The Dean's List requires a minimum of a 3.0 grade-point average.

Merit scholar

Kane Duran Bonnette, a 2003 Evans High School graduate, has earned a National Merit Scholarship to attend Georgia Tech in the fall. He was a member of Evans' marching band and Wind Ensemble II, the chess and science clubs, the math team, the Greater Augusta Youth Orchestra, Venture Crew 2 and the Augusta Fencers Club.

Kane is an Eagle Scout, and is the lodge chief of the Bob White Lodge Order of the Arrow and an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 2.

SIU dean's list

The following area students have been named to Southern Illinois University dean's list with more than 3,000 other students: Letricia Jean Calhoun of Evans; Charles Oliver Dillard, Jr. of Evans; Angela Wilson Rainier of Evans; Rebecca Kaye White of Evans; Pogiressa D. Hargitt-Scott of Grovetown; Richard Eric Wheeler of Grovetown; Benjamin F. Wright of Grovetown; James Daniel Blackman of Martinez; Bruce Joseph Nixon of Martinez; Christopher Travis Rowe of Martinez; John C. Schipper of Martinez; Ronald K. Sonsteng of Martinez.

These students make up the top 15 percent of the undergraduate body and have met the minimum standards of a grade-point average between 3.25 to 3.75.

Marquette dean's list

Emily G. Ballweg of Martinez has recently been named to Marquette University Dean's List for the spring semester.

Agnes Scott graduate

Agnes Scott College graduate Tayyeba Ahmad of Martinez earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in English literature-creative writing. She was among 184 students awarded bachelor's degrees and is a graduate of Lakeside High School.

New ambassador

Sarah Holloway of Evans, a University of South Carolina student, has been named a USC Visitor Center student ambassador. Holloway, a sophomore business major, is a member of the Newman club, Gamma Beta Phi and Habitat for Humanity.

The ambassadors are responsible for guiding prospective students on campus tours, operating the center's information desk, fielding visitors' questions about the university and playing host to the center's special events.

Valdosta State grad

Jennifer Lynn Hodges of Martinez is a spring 2003 graduate of Valdosta State University. She earned a Master of Education degree in special education.

Wofford dean's list

Allison Paige Cook, a graduate of Augusta Christian Schools, has been placed on the dean's list of Wofford College for the spring semester. She is double majoring in government and history and is the daughter of Tim and Kathy Cook of Appling.

Scholarship winners

The following students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Merchants Association of Columbia County: Harold Cochran, Harlem High School; Shalia Bussey, Greenbrier High School; Nellie Rovansek, Lakeside High School; Lindsay McCleskey, Evans High School.

Three $2,000 scholarships were awarded to the following students: Lisa Fern, Evans High School; Zachary Zapata, Greenbrier High School; Haley Neal, Harlem High School.

The Merchants Association of Columbia County is involved with charities including Make a Wish Foundation, scholarships program with all Columbia County high schools, the Children's Miracle Network and Camp Rainbow.

Augusta Tech dean's list

Nearly 50 students attending the Thomson/McDuffie County Campus of Augusta Technical College have been named to the dean's list for spring quarter. The following students are enrolled to pursue associate degrees.

These students compiled a quarterly grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Vanderbilt dean's list

Jennifer Lynn Schwartz of Martinez has been named to Vanderbilt University dean's list for spring semester. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Paul B. Schwartz.

To qualify for the Arts and Science Dean's List, students must receive a grade-point average between 3.5 and 4.0.

National award winner

Matt Kincaid of Roswell has been named a United States National Award Winner in Arts. This award recognizes fewer than 10 percent of American high school students. Matt attends The Cottage School, where he was nominated by Mary Jo Manus, an art teacher at the school. Matt is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Jeff Kincaid of Roswell, and the grandson of Glenna Kincaid of Tifton and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ward of Martinez.

Red and Black staffer

Elizabeth Young, a 2000 graduate of Greenbrier High School, has been selected to the staff of The Red and Black, the official newspaper for the University of Georgia. She is a rising senior at UGA majoring in consumer journalism.

Elizabeth is a member of the Alpha Zeta Academic Honorary Society, College of Agriculture and the daughter of Tonney and Michel Young of Evans.

Military news

Navy Seaman Recruit Christopher S. Knapp, a 2002 graduate of Evans High School and son of Anna L. and Stephen M. Knapp of Evans, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Army Spec. Franklin J. Georgia, a 1995 graduate of Evans High School, has graduated from the rough terrain cargo specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Eustis, Newport News, Va.
