Columbia County officials are asking for residents' comments on recommendations made in the fire services draft study.
Five public meetings will be July 17-31.
"We really want the public to have an understanding and ask all the questions," said Pam Tucker, director of the county's Emergency Management Agency. "The study belongs to everybody. It is not being done in a office at the government center. It belongs to everybody, every citizen that lives in the county."
County Administrator Steve Szablewski will present the fire study recommendations and he and other county officials will answer questions.
Tucker said responses to the study have been positive. After sending letters to most subdivision association heads asking them to spread the word, Tucker received many calls with positive comments.
In addition to the county meetings, the Leah Volunteer Fire Department is holding a specially called subscriber meeting to discuss the study and a partial merger of the Leah, Winfield and Appling volunteer departments.
The meeting will be 7 p.m. July 22 at Station No. 2 on Burks Mountain Road. Szablewski will make a presentation on the fire study.
"I think it is going to be better all around," Leah Chief Charles Hogan said. "We will work closer that we have in the past."
The department's board will not make any decisions regarding the merger or fire study recommendations until its members can consult with subscribers, Hogan said.
"We are doing everything we can to work with the county commissioners," he said. "I am shooting for the stars. If (the county) decides to take the money up all together, we can build a department the county can be proud of, the state can be proud of. That is still what we are shooting for."
