Advocate training
The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program of Child Enrichment is looking for volunteers, 21 and older, to advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system. Volunteers need no experience and will receive specialized training from local professionals in the social service field. Participants will learn courtroom procedure and advocacy skills.

Online permits
The Georgia Forestry Commission's Columbia County Unit, who issues burning permits in person and by telephone, now offers them online. Visit www.gfc.state.ga.us and follow the directions.
The only burning material the permit covers is leaves, small limbs and pine straw. The legal burning hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.. The permit is only for notification purposes as homeowners are still responsible for any liability issues the smoke or fire may cause.

The commission also offers assistance with outside burning and evaluations of homes that could be in a potential line of fire.
Fall enrollment open

GAP applications accepted
Grassroots Arts Program grant applications are being accepted for 2003 to support community arts projects such as dance performances, concerts, murals, readings, storytelling and public art. To be eligible for funds, organization must be incorporated in Georgia as nonprofit and tax-exempt or be a unit of government.
Applications can be obtained from the Greater Augusta Arts Council, 1301 Green St., Augusta, and must be returned by July 18. Projects must take place between Sept. 15, 2003, and June 30, 2004. For more information, contact project coordinator Erin Swenson at 826-4702.
Mother's Day Out

Cooling centers
Two cooling centers have been opened by the Columbia County Emergency Management Agency.
Columbia County residents without access to air conditioning are encouraged to use the centers, which will remain open through September.
The Bessie Thomas Community Center at 5913 Euchee Creek Drive is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and features a sitting room with a television, ice water, ice cream, and soft drink and snack vending machines.
The center at Patriots Park, 5445 Columbia Road, is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. The center features a sitting room with ice water and television.

Golf marathon
West Lake Country Club will play host to the 2003 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta Golf Marathon on Monday, Aug. 4. Sponsor and player spots are available. Golfers will play 54 holes, with the best 18-hole score qualifying for prizes.

Marvin United Methodist Church has formed a new group called Prisms for Singles or "single again" people in the Augusta area. The group is not a dating service, but it is expected to expand into a large group to give people a place to get together with others in a casual Christian atmosphere.
