Camps cater to young athletes

School's out, but the learning process can continue for aspiring athletes, thanks to a number of youth sports camps scheduled over the next two months.

Children can get their kicks in soccer, or they can cover all the bases on the baseball or softball diamond. They can brush up on their golf skills, or fulfill some hoop dreams. Another court is calling in volleyball, and there's even a chance to cheer.

For young athletes that don't mind smiling while they're working up a sweat, one of the following camps could be a perfect place to spend some time this summer:

Cheerleading

The Evans Youth Cheerleading Camp, sponsored by the Evans High School cheerleaders, will be June 9-13 at the Evans gym. The camp is for girls in pre-K through fifth grade, and the cost for registration is $90, which must be received by June 6. The camp cost includes a T-shirt, lunch (Monday through Friday), snacks (Monday through Thursday), a certificate of attendance, and awards. Enrollment is limited to the first 100 campers. Daily camp times run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Monday to Thursday sessions, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. For more information call Kelly at 855-0699 or Robin at 650-1796.

Softball

The Greenbrier Fast-pitch Softball Clinic, for girls in grades 3-8, is this week (Monday through Thursday) at Patriots Park. Clinic times run from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. daily. The cost is $85, and $60 for siblings. Team rates are available. T-shirts, snacks and cold drinks are included in the cost. Basketball

The 12th annual Evans Youth Basketball Camp is this week, with a second session scheduled July 7-11. The camps at the Evans High School gym are for boys and girls ages 6-14, and the cost for each camp is $100, or $85 if the camper brings a lunch from home.

The 12th annual Sure-Shot Basketball Camp will feature several sessions for different age groups. The sessions for boys entering grades 6 through 9 are this week at Lakeside Middle School, and June 6-9 at Riverside Middle School. Daily camp times are 1 to 4:30 p.m., and the cost for each individual camp is $80. The sessions for boys and girls entering grades 2 through 5 will be June 9-13 and July 21-25. These camps will be at Lakeside Middle School, and run from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for each individual camp is $75. For more information call Tom Weidenaar or Dave Pitock at 855-6900.

The Fast Break Basketball Camp at Augusta Preparatory Day School will be June 23-27. The cost is $60. The girls session runs from 8 a.m to noon daily, and the boys session is 1 to 5 p.m. For more information call Kevin Furtado at 863-1906 ext. 374.

Volleyball

The Augusta Prep Volleyball Day Camp will be June 9-12. There will be two sessions - one for middle-school players from 8 a.m. to noon, and the other for high school players from 1 to 5 p.m. The cost is $80. Baseball

The Evans High School Youth Baseball Camp will be June 9-13 at the Evans High School baseball field. The camp will get started each day at 9 a.m. and will finish at noon. The cost is $85 per camper. Golf

Applications are being accepted for the David Usry Junior Golf Academy summer camps at North Augusta Country Club. The program offers a series of three day camps this month and July, and is open to all players ages 7-16. Session dates are June 10-12, July 1-3, July 8-10, July 22-24 and July 29-31. Soccer

The Greenbrier Boys Only 3-day Indoor Summer Soccer Camp will be June 10-12 at Greenbrier High School. The camp is for boys ages 10-14, and the cost is $60. Technical Soccer Training will have several camp sessions this summer. A Striker/Keeper Camp will be June 16-20 at Patriots Park; Youth Skills Camp sessions will be June 23-27 and July 14-18 at Citizens Park in Aiken, and there will be a Youth Skills Camp at Patriots Park July 21-25. Football

The Augusta Christian Lions Football Camp for players in grades 1-6 will be June 9-13 at Augusta Christian Schools. The noncontact teaching camp will run daily from 8 a.m. to noon.
