Evans weightlifting
The Evans High School weight room will open Monday for summer workouts. Evans football players can work out Mondays through Thursdays from 8 to 10 a.m., and all other athletes can work out from 10 a.m. to noon. Make-up workout times are from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday. For more information, call 868-3663 and ask for coach Marty Jackson.
Baseball showcase
The Georgia Underclassman Showcase for rising 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade high-school baseball players will have a tryout session June 16 at the Augusta State University baseball field. The showcase is being staged with the cooperation of the Georgia Dugout Club and the USA Baseball Developmental Program. Registration is at 8:30 a.m., and the showcase begins at 10 a.m. The format allows prep players to gain exposure, and the cost is $75. After the tryout phase, the showcase committee will select the best 80 players from the 10 statewide showcase locations. These young men will have the chance to be a part of one of four 20-man teams that will play July 13-15 at Georgia Southern University. Each of the 80 players will be involved in a pro workout and a round-robin game format during the three days in Statesboro.

Patriots tryouts
The Columbia County Patriots Select Soccer tryouts for the 2003-04 season are getting under way for the under-12 and younger age groups. This week, tryouts continue this week for boys and girls ages 8-12. Tryouts for U10, U11 and U12 for boys will be Tuesday and Thursday, and for girls the tryouts will be Tuesday through Saturday. Tryouts for boys and girls in U13 through U17 age brackets will be June 9, 10, 12 and 17; tryouts for U19 boys and girls will be June 9, 10, 11 and 17. All tryouts will be at the Patriots Park soccer fields. Weekday tryouts will begin at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. The tryouts are free, and all competitive players in the CSRA are welcome. Junior volleyball registration
Beginning Sundays, June 1 through Aug. 3, Augusta Juniors is sponsoring recreational volleyball at 1 p.m. at the Family Y on Wheeler Road. Rising seventh-graders through just-graduated seniors are invited to participate. All interested players will be placed on teams for summer play. The cost is $15 for full members of the Family Y; $20 for bronze members of the Family Y; and, $30 for non-members. Register with Elaine Cupp of Augusta Juniors at the Family Y on June 1.
