Editor:
I read Melissa Halls May 18 story in The Columbia County News-Times, Foreign language plan needs study, superintendent says, with great interest. Apparently the Columbia County School Board wants to make Spanish mandatory for kindergarten through eighth grade. They also want the middle school Spanish classes to be longer than the 30 minutes that is allotted now.
It is obvious that the politically correct school board wants everyone bilingual in Spanish. I guess it is easier to educate the English speakers in Spanish than it is to require Spanish speakers to learn English. Why are parents and children not allowed to pick a different foreign language to study? Why isnt German, French or Latin offered for K-eighth?
My children happen to be learning German as well as American Sign Language. The school system they attend is not politically correct, and is able to offer any language they show an interest in. Which school system are my children in? My five children are home schooled. The News-Times has shown yet another reason why my children do not attend a government-run school.
