Online permits
The Georgia Forestry Commission's Columbia County Unit, who issues burning permits in person and by telephone, now offers them online. Visit www.gfc.state.ga.us and follow the directions.
The only burning materials the permit covers are leaves, small limbs and pine straw. The legal burning hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The permit is only for notification purposes as homeowners are still responsible for any liability issues the smoke or fire may cause.
For a permit for larger brush piles, questions on burning or more information, call 556-3962.
The commission also offers assistance with outside burning and evaluations of homes that could be in a potential line of fire.
