Scout golf tourney

The Georgia-Carolina Boy Scouts of America will hold the 17th annual Alltel Boy Scout Golf Classic on Monday, June 9, at Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a box lunch at noon. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner will follow the tournament.

The cost is $500 per foursome or $150 per person., which includes lunch, unlimited practice on the driving range, 18 holes of golf, an awards reception, an auction and tournament favors.

Mothers Day Out

West Acres Baptist Church is holding registration for the 2003-04 Mother's Day Out program for children ages 18 months through 4 years. The summer program begins May 20. The church is on Gibbs Road. For more information, call Helen at 863-2542.

West Lake Country Club will play host to the 2003 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta Golf Marathon on Monday, Aug. 4. Sponsor and player spots are available. Golfers will play 54 holes for the best 18-hole score for prizes.

Summer enrichment

Gospel Water Branch Baptist Church is holding registration for its Full Summer Enrichment Program for 2003. The program cost $50 per week and lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a $5 per-week transportation charge and $20 for before and after care. Care before and after the program from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. is $60 per week for each.

Pre-enrichment lasts May 19-30. The program runs from June 2 to July 11. Post Enrichment care lasts July 14-31. It is available to children ages 4-14 (grades pre-K through eighth).

Marvin United Methodist Church has formed a new group called Prisms for singles or "single again" people in the Augusta area. The Columbia County Planning and Development office is encouraging residents to ensure that their homes have their street address numbers plainly visible from the street so that emergency personnel can find the correct address.

House numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, mounted on a mailbox, be visible from both directions of the road and should not be hidden by weeds or flowers.

Sign-ups being held for livestock producers assistance

Sign-up continues for the Livestock Compensation Program for producers that did not apply during the first sign-up Oct. 1 through Dec. 13, 2002. Sign-ups are done at the McDuffie County FSA office, 226 Bib Kirk Road, Thomson.

The program assists livestock producers in disaster designated counties of McDuffie, Warren, Richmond and Columbia counties with direct payments based on the number of eligible animals owned as of June 1, 2002. The animals must have been owned for at least 90 days before June 1.

Online permits

The Georgia Forestry Commission's Columbia County Unit, who issues burning permits in person and by telephone, now offers them online. Visit www.gfc.state.ga.us and follow the directions.

The only burning material the permit covers is leaves, small limbs and pine straw. The legal burning hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.. The permit is only for notification purposes as homeowners are still responsible for any liability issues the smoke or fire may cause.

For a permit for larger brush piles, question on burning or more information, call 556-3962.

The commission also offers assistance with outside burning and evaluations of homes that could be in a potential line of fire.
