Wreck damages West Lake sign

A chunk of a familiar landmark on Furys Ferry Road is missing.

A sign announcing the entrance to the Westlake subdivision was damaged in a single-car accident April 29. The "W" was completely destroyed on the sign that now reads "estlake."

Westlake property manager and resident Jean Garniewicz said the accident was caused by a medical condition suffered by the driver.

Garniewicz said she has no timetable on repairing the sign, but she is awaiting estimates on the cost to fix it. The sign was constructed by Augusta-based Wooden Features Inc., which also will be doing the repairs

"I intend to get it fixed, but I don't know when," she said. "There are a lot of things that have to be done first."

Another pressing issue Garniewicz is contending with is dispelling rumors of how the sign was damaged.

"I've had a lot of calls," she said. "As you know (the Georgia Department of Transportation) has to come in here and do a massive amount of work. A rumor I've squelched is that DOT was responsible for taking half the sign down. That had nothing to do it. It was an accident."
