Fifth-grade pupils at Stevens Creek Elementary School participated in a Black History Month Contest in February. Pupils could enter the contest by submitting an essay, poem or visual-art piece on a black American who they thought made the greatest contribution to American life in the last quarter of the 20th century.
Art winners are Alex Russell (front row, from left), second-place art for Colin Powell; Savannah Crews, first place for Ray Charles; and Chris Tynan, third place for Frederick Douglass. Standing are Lucinda Clark (back row, from left), contest sponsor; Austin Sprague, third place writing winner; and Principal Michelle Paschal. Sponsors from local businesses donated prizes of $50 for first prize, $35 for second and $25 for third.
