Sign-ups being held for livestock producers assistance

Sign-up continues for the Livestock Compensation Program for producers that did not apply during the first sign-up Oct. 1 through Dec. 13, 2002. Sign-ups are done at the McDuffie County FSA office, 226 Bib Kirk Road, Thomson.

The program assists livestock producers in disaster designated counties of McDuffie, Warren, Richmond and Columbia counties with direct payments based on the number of eligible animals owned as of June 1, 2002. The animals must have been owned for at least 90 days before June 1.

Brookwood first grade to present Hoppin' musical

First-graders of Brookwood Elementary School will present the musical production Get Hoppin' at 2:15 and 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, and 9 a.m. Friday, April 18.

The musical is the story of a rabbit family and the baby bunny who refuses to hop until the day she discovers a rocking radio. The production includes 125 first-graders in bunny costumes who sing and dance. The event is free and will be at the school, 455 South Old Belair Road.

Grovetown Middle holding first carnival

Grovetown Middle School will be the location for the school's first Spring Fling Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26. The event will include food, games, crafts and more.

Family Y to hold Easter-themed family night

The Family Y is playing host to an Easter Egg-stravaganza Family Night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at Camp Lakeside on Lake Thurmond. Scheduled activities include a hayride, Easter egg hunt, an environmental educational activity, hotdog dinner and marshmallow roast.

Boy Scouts holding Golf Classic

The Georgia-Carolina Boy Scouts of America is playing host to the 17th annual Alltel Boy Scout Golf Classic Monday, June 9, at Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a box lunch at noon. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner will follow the tournament.

The cost is $500 per foursome or $150 per person., which includes lunch, unlimited driving range, 18 holes of golf, awards reception, auction and tournament favors. All levels of sponsorship are available.

Annual golf tourney to benefit Gianzmann's Thrombasthenia

The Gianzmann's Thrombasthenia Reserach Foundation will hold its third annual golf and auction classic at Belle Meade Country Club, Thomson, on April 25. GT is a bleeding disorder that prevents the sufferer from clotting. Thomson is the home of a four-year-old with the disease.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with lunch provided by Macaroni Grill at 11:30 a.m. Bagpipes will signal a start at 1 p.m. Dinner and an auction will begin at 6 p.m.

Classic cars to cruise into Harlem High

Harlem High School is playing host to the Big Dog Car Show from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the school. All kinds of vehicles including domestics, imports, trucks and motorcycles will be there.

The show offers a bass competition among others and games. Awards will be presented.

U.S. Rep. Democrats meet

Award luncheon

The Thomson-McDuffie County Chamber of Commerce will announce the Administrative Assistant of the Year at the 15th annual Administrative Professionals Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the First Methodist Church Family Life Center. A fashion show will be included.

Fire department fund-raiser

The Winfield Volunteer Fire Department will hold a barbecue and yard sale on Saturday, April 19, at the main fire station on Cobbham Road. The yard sale begins at 7 a.m. and the barbecue goes on sale at 10 a.m.

The department is seeking vendors to rent yard sale tables for $5. All proceeds from sales of items goes to the owner, not the department. To reserve a table, call Patrick Bargeron at 541-0446.

A barbecue plate will include barbecued meat with all the trimmings cooked by the firemen for $6 per plate.

Singles group

Marvin United Methodist Church has formed a new group called Prisms for singles or "single again" people in the Augusta area. The group is not a dating service, but it is expected to expand into a large group to give people a place to get together with others in a casual Christian atmosphere. there will be some fun outings and casual meetings at the church on the corner of Belair and Wheeler roads.

Y offers Easter events

The Family Y Easter Egg-stravaganza programs offer springtime field-trip opportunities for groups and a special evening event for families, at the Family Y's camp at Thurmond Lake.

The Easter Egg-stravaganza Field Trips program is open to children pre-K through fifth grade. Groups may schedule trips for April 14-18, at 10 or 11:15 a.m. each day. The trip includes arts and crafts, an Easter story, an Easter egg hunt and an environmental education activity involving live baby chicks.

Lunch is included. The cost is $5 per person. Teachers are admitted free.

Trinity Baptist accepting preschool applications

Harlem history sought

Harlem's newly created Historic Preservation Commission is seeking photographs and historical information on the city's homes that are at least 50 years old. Traveling Toilet

The Traveling Toilet was such a success that the City of Harlem's Relay for Life is adding a second toilet. Anyone can pay $10 to have the toilet sent to someone. Pre-K registration

The Georgia Pre-Kindergarten is currently registering students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Only 40 slots are available and the child must be a Georgia resident and 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2003.

Sons of Confederate Veterans, Columbia County Maj. Gen. Ambrose R. Wright Camp No. 1914 meets at 7 p.m. every fourth Tuesday at the Upper Crust restaurant in Evans.

House numbers

The Columbia County Planning and Development office is encouraging residents to ensure that their homes have their street address numbers plainly visible from the street so that emergency personnel can find the correct address.

House numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, mounted on a mailbox, be visible from both directions of the road and should not be hidden by weeds or flowers.
