The Columbia County Lookouts 13-and-under baseball team is ranked first in Georgia, according to the USSSA ranking report for the 13-and-under Majors.
The Lookouts earned the No. 1 ranking by winning their first two tournaments of the 2003 season, and the squad has already secured a spot in the USSSA World Series, which will be played this July in Winston-Salem, N.C.
In the season-opening tournament last month in Douglasville, Ga., the Lookouts posted wins over the Ohio Bombers, the Powder Springs Reds and the Alabama Lookouts. During the tournament, Columbia County outscored its opponents 19-0.
In the Spartanburg Spring Classic, held on March 8-9, the Lookouts took first place by defeating the Upstate Mavericks, the Aiken Wildcats, and the Twin City Bombers.

The Lookouts displayed outstanding pitching and defense in both tournaments, and at the plate, the Lookouts piled up 37 runs during the six victories.

Leading hitters for the Lookouts were Ryan Cato (7 for 15, with a double); Derek Herbine (4 for 12, with a double); Cody McElhaney (3 for 5, with a double and triple); Patrick McGowan (6 for 18, with four doubles); and, Eric Voldness (6 for 13 with a double).
Outstanding pitching performances were turned in by McElhaney, McGowan and Shane Nelson. They allowed only 17 hits in six games.
