Evans senior named county STAR student
Evalin Rhodes was named 1962 STAR Student for the Columbia County school system at the Martinez-Evans Lions Club. She is a senior at Evans High School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Rhodes Sr. of Martinez.
Evalin selected Col. Troy A. Walker, an Evans High School teacher, as her STAR Teacher, the teacher who made the biggest contribution to the student's academic success.

The announcement was made as part of the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, sponsored statewide by the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce and the Martinez-Evans Lions Club. STAR designation is based on the highest score on the College Board Scholastic Aptitude and their averages in the first semester of senior year.
Winfield-Appling road paving scheduled
Over five miles of paving on Winfield-Appling Road will be included in bids to be received by the State Highway Department on March 23. Jim Gillis, the highway board chairman, said specifications call for 5.555 miles of grading and paving and one bridge on the Winfield-Appling Road beginning at State Route 150 at Winfield and extend southeast toward Appling.
Citizens for Good Government meet
The Martinez Citizens for Good Government held their first public meeting March 1. More than 60 people attended to hear guest speaker Sam Waller, an Augusta attorney.
Waller congratulated the group on their interest in government and politics and referred to the recent surge of patriotism because of Col. John Glenn's flight, which represented pride in what we can do, in the future and being an American. He spoke of how we can take advantage of our privileges as Americans and many of us fail to realize our responsibilities.
