My family has been involved in the theater community in the Augusta area for many years. I am a former Board member and past president of the Augusta Players. My wife is the Artreach Coordinator for the Augusta Players, as well as a drama teacher at The Art Factory. My children have appeared in several productions of both the Augusta Players and the Young Artists Repertory Theatre Company (YART), including the current Augusta Players production of Annie, and the upcoming YART production of Cheaper by the Dozen.
I therefore wish to express how deeply saddened we were by the inclusion of our names in the March 2 News-Times story by Melissa Hall, Theater company puts focus on projects for young actors (http://www.newstimesonline.com/stories/030203/new_158-4401.shtml).
This story includes negative comments concerning youth productions at the Augusta Players, an organization that has given the youth of the CSRA (including my children) the opportunity to perform on stage for over 50 years.
My family does not share the views expressed in this article, and are embarrassed for YART. I cannot believe it is in the best interests of our youth to see this kind of bashing.
