Kirk receives football scholarship
Spurgeon Kirk, the top fullback of the Blanchard High School Bulldogs, was recently awarded a four-year athletic scholarship to Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Fla.
Kirk, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kirk Sr., has a great high school football record including 60 touchdowns, 20 two-point conversions, throwing for 25 touchdown passes and gaining over 4,000 yards in rushing.
Bulldogs coach R.H. Thompson is pleased with Kirk's record and saidthe 6-foot-1, 215 pound senior was a good power runner and likes to run over people. He is hostile, mobile and versatile.
At Florida A & M, Kirk will continue as a running back and plans to major in physical education.

George T. White's Teacher of the Year chosen
Sawyer Holly Holloman was elected by her peers as George T. White Elementary School's Teacher of the Year. She possesses characteristics which make her a symbol of the teaching profession in personal, professional, citizenship and human relations aspects.
Holloman lives in Augusta, but teaches at the Harlem school. The Edenton, N.C., native has studied along the Eastern seaboard including receiving her bachelor of education degree from the Elizabeth City Teachers College, Elizabeth City, N.C. and studying in New Jersey and North Carolina.
Holloman is married to Sgt. 1st Class Whalon Holloman and they have a daughter.
GOP chairman not seeking re-election
Columbia County Republic Party Chairman, H.L. McConnell, announced today that he will not seek re-election in the party's re-organizational convention next month. The party re-organizes and elects new officers every two years.
McConnell made his announcement and presented each male county committee member with an elephant lapel pin and thanked them for their help and concern for good government. He did say he would be available to work for GOP candidates and in any capacity the party needs him to.
McConnell said he believes that the Republican Party of the party of the people and the only political organization through which the ordinary citizen can have a say in government.
