New owners
With the Feb. 11 edition of The Columbia News, the Williams family is turning over publishing duties to Edgar Kobak and Frank Hash - the owners of The McDuffie Progress in Thomson.
Carey Williams said family members had recently spent three weeks at a New York hospital. The experience showed it was time to scale back their involvement in the newspaper.
"We have tried to give the people of Columbia County a good newspaper, and feel that in disposing of it to the new owners that the county will be assured of an excellent county organ," Williams wrote.

Taxes due
The final date for filing City of Harlem tax returns for the year 1954 is Feb. 20.
The Georgia law requires that each property owner shall make a return of his property for taxation purposes each year and provides a penalty for failure to do so. The necessary forms may be obtained at Harlem City Hall.
Hunting seasons
The season for hunting deer, turkey and squirrel expired Jan. 5, 1954. Dove season expired Jan. 8, 1954, and duck and geese season expired a day later.
Quail season will expire Feb. 25, 1954, and rabbit season expires the last day of February.
Any person who killed a deer or turkey during the season is requires to make a report to the State Game and Fish Commission within five days after the season closes.
