"Greatness is judged through sacrifice. They will always be the greatest," wrote a Columbia County resident on the sympathy card the county is sending to the families of the fallen flight crew of the space shuttle Columbia.

The card, created at no charge by FastSigns, was sent with all its messages Friday evening to NASA to share with the grieving families of the crew members.

"I think it is real nice," said Pam Fidler, who is familiar with a family member in a dangerous job. Her son is a Navy SEAL. "I feel for them. But like (the crew), he knows the risks."

Some messages on the card were appreciative to the families and the crew for their sacrifices and called the crew heroes. Most simply said the families would be in thoughts, prayers and hearts.

The 3-by-4-foot corrugated plastic card carried the Columbia County logo and reads, "Our Sympathy from citizens of Columbia County, Georgia, to the families of the space shuttle Columbia flight crew."

Chris and Sandy Randall were at the Columbia County Government Complex in Evans to attend a pruning seminar by the extension service when they saw and decided to sign the card.

Mrs. Randall wrote: "We will always remember the sacrifice made for us. May God comfort those left behind."
