Self-defense class offered
The Lakeside High School Family Career and Community Leaders of America in coordination with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office will present Taking a Kick Out of Violence: A Self-Defense Session. It will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Lakeside High gymnasium. The event is part of FCCLA's national Students Taking On Prevention project.

Korean War veterans meeting scheduled
The Korean War Veterans Association, Sgt. Harold F. Adkinson Chapter 225, meets monthly at 2 p.m. on the third Saturday in the Burnettown Town Hall, S.C. Highway 421, Burnettown, S.C.
Membership is available to anyone who served in the armed forces from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955, and anyone who served in the armed forces in Korea from 1945 through the present. Associate memberships are available to other interested parties.

Harlem church offering storytelling workshop
The Harlem United Methodist Church is holding The Ins and Outs of Storytelling, a workshop on the art of Biblical storytelling by professional storyteller Tracy Radosevic. It will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 1, at the church at 115 Milledgeville Highway, Harlem.
At 6:30 p.m., Radosevic willl perform a storytelling concert.

Emergency Services hosting blood drive
Columbia County Emergency Services Division is holding a community blood drive for Shepheard Community Blood Center to help replenish blood supplies after the holidays. The drive will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in the Evans Government Complex auditorium at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive, Building A.

The Columbia County Planning and Development office is encouraging residents to ensure that their homes have their street address numbers plainly visible from the street so that emergency personnel can find the correct address.
House numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, mounted on a mailbox, be visible from both directions of the road and should not be hidden by weeds or flowers.

Fit 4 weight loss and nutrition class will be at Wesley United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. tonight through March 23. The Fit 4 exercise and fitness class will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 8 through March 26 at the church on North Belair Road.
Fit 4 stands for fitness is four areas of life: heart, soul, mind and strength. It also teaches a balanced approach to total health.

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for volunteers age 21 and older to help advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.
