The year was 2100 and the wars and shifts in political power had been amazing, even compared to the changes during the 20th century.

Europe had fallen under the onslaught of the Mideastern countries. China had suffered badly in its war with Russia. After many years of tough times, Russia was now the superpower of the world. Russia was kept at bay by the United Nations, which was now dominated by the countries of the Mideast, Africa and South America. Japan had once again become a society unto itself. The economic and cultural conditions around the world regressed by about 250 years.
The terrorist wars, illegal immigration, the default on foreign debt and several nuclear attacks by terrorists had devastated the United States. Also, the U.S. attempted to pull out of the United Nations, but the U.S. was defeated by the U.N. and occupied for nine years.
The U.S. had been forced to suspend many of its old constitutional rules. However, the U.S. was allowed to fly the Stars and Stripes flag that some citizens liked to call Old Glory.
Many of the new immigrants, politicians and business leaders suggested Old Glory was too controversial and should be retired. In the year 2098 a new president was elected, and with some behind-the-scenes bargaining, a new blue and white flag was unveiled. There was some grumbling from supporters of the old Constitution and the Old Glory flag-wavers, but the new flag prevailed.
Very few citizens expected that the old flag would ever return. Some in the opposition party, however, suggested that if elected they would give the people a chance to vote on the flag.
