I enjoyed Barry Paschals recent column about the Lakeside/Evans heckling.
His mentioning of the Duke taunt aimed at a student named Hale reminded me of an event that happened while I was at Duke.
Back in 1978 or 1979, the coach of the N.C. State Wolfpack, Stormin Norman Sloan, had announced before the season that he had the system to beat Duke. (I might mention that due to tournaments the schools played four times that year, and Duke won all four.) Two of the games were played at Duke. Shortly before the first game, three N.C. State players were arrested for shoplifting underwear from the N.C. State campus bookstore.

When the N.C. State team was announced, about 15-20 pairs of briefs came flying out of the audience.
Sloan lost his temper (thats how he got his nickname, by the way), and after the game he went into a verbal rampage on TV about the Duke fans and students, claimed they were all drunk, etc., etc.
Mistake.
Next time they played at Duke, the announcer said, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK . . .
The game had to be delayed 20 minutes to sweep all the underwear off the floor.
