'Encouraging words' for parapros appreciated

Editor:

Thanks to Barry Paschal so very much for his encouraging words and thoughtfulness concerning paraprofessionals (column, More school, more money, Dec. 8).

You are truly one of the few people who understands the heavy loads we carry. Most of us really love working with children. I know I do!

I have been a special education paraprofessional for 12 years. I have always worked in special education as these children are the loves of my life. They are so very special!

I must travel from Martinez to North Harlem Elementary each day, even through I live within 10 miles of at least four elementary schools. I have repeatedly expressed how unfair it is that I travel more than 30 miles a day with the small amount we make, but the Columbia County Board of Education will not transfer me. All of those years in the system mean nothing.

It is times like this when someone stands up and writes a caring and thoughtful column that you know someone cares - and it means a lot!
