Lady Knights earn honors
Three Evans High School fastpitch softball players were honored with Class AAAAA All-State recognition. Senior Anna Cheely was named to the All-State second team, while senior Natassia Wilkes and junior Meredith Weare were honorable mention All-State selections.
Cheely played second base for the Lady Knights, and led the team with a .342 batting average in 2002. Wilkes posted a .953 fielding percentage at her center field position. Weare was her squad's pitching ace this fall, tossing five no-hiiters and 10 shutouts while striking out 169 batters in 179 innings or work.
Evans alumni soccer
There will be a men's alumni soccer game at 2 p.m. Dec. 28 at Evans High School. All former Evans soccer players are invited to participate. The cost is $25, which includes a shirt and water bottle. Softball tryouts
The Wild Things girls fastpitch softball travel team will conduct a tryout at 2 p.m. Dec. 22 at Patriots Park softball complex. The tryout is open for ages 16-and-under and 14-and-under. For more information, call Steve Schultz (541-1824) or Jim Borum (860-9489).
Booster meeting
The Evans High School Athletic Booster Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the school's media center. All interested parties are invited.
Tennis lessons
Petersburg Racquet Club in Martinez is offering free tennis lessons from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday. These lessons are for beginning junior players ages 18 and under. You do not have to be a member of PRC to attend. The lessons are part of the USA 123 Tennis Program. For more information contact Dave Gleason, PRC director of tennis, at 860-9288.
Lakeside alumni soccer
Lakeside High School will hold its third -annual Men's Alumni Soccer Match at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Panther Stadium. The cost to play is $25, which included an alumni match T-shirt. GAS results
Columbia County's Bennett Yort paced the Greater Augusta Swimming team with two wins during the last weekend's Lanier Aquatics 13th annual Winter Invitational in Gainesville, Ga.
Yort, swimming in the 8-and-under age group, won the 25-yard breaststroke (:21.10) and the 50-yard breaststroke (:47.50). He added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle, and was third in five other events.
Also competing for gas was J.R. Barrett. The Lakeside High School student swam in the Senior age group, and placed third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:53.47).
