Mary Hannah Lynn and Kyle Arrington
Photo by Jim BlaylockAugusta Preparatory Day School's Kyle Arrington and Mary Hannah Lynn were actors in Prep's recent production of Les Miserables, and their parts in the stage play are being re-enacted in real life.
Arrington played the role of Javert, a stubborn character who searched 20 years for one man. Lynn played Cosette, an abused girl who is eventually rescued and falls in love.
Now Arrington's search has ended, and Lynn's Cinderella story has come true - Augusta Prep's basketball teams aren't miserable this season.
Arrington, a senior center, missed the first three weeks of basketball practice because of Les Mis, but the team co-captain has come on strong to help spark Prep to solid start.
In addition to being a straight-A student, Lynn, a sophomore center, has asserted herself by leading the Lady Cavaliers in rebounding and scoring.
"Both of those kids are tremendously talented, and their leadership skills are unbelievable," said Kevin Furtado, who coaches both the boys and girls basketball teams at Augusta Prep. "You could put them in any type of area and they would do well."
Right now, their area of expertise is on the hardwood.
"It's nice to be able to take what I've learned playing varsity the last three years and incorporate that on behalf of the team," Arrington said. "Prep isn't known for basketball, it's known for academics. Now we have two good basketball teams. We're looking for a season to be proud of."
Earlier this season, the Augusta Prep boys earned a tournament title in Atlanta, and the Lady Cavaliers followed with a championship last week in the Garden City Classic Basketball tournament.
Lynn landed a spot on the Garden City all-tournament team, which was just a bonus - the real satisfaction was joining her teammates at the trophy presentation ceremony.
"We're really unified right now," Lynn said. "We're playing as a team, and that's the reason for the success we've had so far this year."
