Re the Dec. 1 editorial, Board should open up to public:
I want to offer some additional thoughts. First of all, the calendar as approved is only a done deal if the citizens of Columbia County want it to be. No law says that the Board cannot rescind its previous action if it deems necessary.
As a Board member, I have only one vote and no legal power outside of a public meeting, except to voice my opinion. For me personally the calendar has no impact. My youngest will graduate this year.
But I was not elected to serve my self-interest, but those of the citizens of this great county. Once elected to the Board, a member must realize their decisions not only affect their district, but the county at large (students, moms, dads, teachers, businesses, etc.) Democracy demands that the voice of its people be heard. The power of a Board members voice comes from a community that stands up, speaks out and gets involved in what it believes.
This calendar may be a good one, but who will know until it has been given full review and debate? There are many talking points that have not been considered.
If you are happy with the calendar, do nothing. But if you are not, the next Board meeting is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Evans Government Complex Auditorium. Remem-ber: You must register to speak before the meeting. Make your opinion known - it is your school system. Thank you for allowing me to serve you.
