The Residents Council and craft class of Windermere Nursing Home are sponsoring a craft bazaar from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in the lobby of the nursing home at 3618 J. Dewey Gray Circle, across from Doctors Hospital.

All proceeds are expected to go to the Residents Council for the beautification of their memory garden and to purchase all craft supplies.

Calvin Johnson to perform

Calvin Johnson, of Little Wings Ditto, will perform Little Wings songs during a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 3501 Walton Way Extension.

Admission costs $5. Proceeds are expected to benefit the Unitarian Universalist National Youth Ministry Fund and the local UU youth group.

Grant-writing seminar

JLJ Resources Inc., a local nonprofit company in Grovetown, is sponsoring Grant Writing for Beginners from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Augusta Technical College.

Saluting the American spirit

Lakeside Middle School will hold it's fourth annual Veteran's Day program, A Salute to the American Spirit, at 9 p.m. Friday at the school on Blue Ridge Drive, Evans.

The program will honor area veterans and active military, police and firefighters through a musical and inspirational message from a speaker, and the school's band and chorus.

She Festival

The She Festival is holding an open audition/rehearsal Saturday at Crossroads near 11th and Broad streets, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

All dancers, singers and musicians must be prepared for a three-minute audition; artists are expected to bring samples of their artwork. The festival will take place Nov. 16 at Crossroads. Profits from ticket sales are expected to benefit shelters in Georgia that help victims of domestic abuse.

Time capsule help

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners is asking residents to donate items for a time capsule that will be buried on the grounds of the county's new Justice Center in Evans.

Items will be accepted through Nov. 15 and can be anything that signifies the year 2002 in Columbia County. To make a donation to the time capsule, call County Project Coordinator Marilyn Heuer at the county commissioners office at 868-3379.

Arts board meeting scheduled

The Columbia County Arts board and member meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Brandon Wilde clubhouse on Owens Road.

The meeting will include a brief musical program by harpist Vonda Darr, review of the past year's activities, project projects for next year, election of board members and socializing and friendship.

Heavenly Touch to perform

Heavenly Touch, a quartet, will perform gospel music at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Harlem Baptist Church,at Georgia Highway 221's intersection with U.S. Highway 278.

The concert is free and open to the public. A love offering will be taken.

Mind Over Matter

The Forum for Advancement of Interreligious Tolerance and Harmony, Augusta, is holding a symposium entitled "Mind Over Matter" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the University Hospital Auditorium at 3500 Walton Way.

Dr. Vernon Barnes, of the Georgia Prevention Institute at the Medical College of Georgia, will lead the discussion about how the mind affects our physical well-being. Panelists will include Dr. Michael Shlaer, an oncologist, and Dr. James M. Schear, a psychologist.

Juvenile board volunteers needed

The Columbia County Juvenile Court is looking for volunteers for the Citizens Panel for Foster Care Review. Volunteers assist in reviewing compliance with court orders in cases of children removed from families because of abuse or neglect.

Panels meet monthly to review cases an make recommendations to the court for children to return home or be placed for adoption. Volunteers receive an initial two days' training and ongoing training throughout the year.

Parade participants needed

The Columbia County Merchants Association's annual Christmas Parade will be Dec. 1. Participants are being sought, and may contact Ruby Lane at 863-0785 for applications. The deadline for entries is Nov. 20.

County choral society honoring God and country

The Columbia County Choral Society will present God and Country, a musical tribute to America's Heroes and First Responders at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15, at Stevens Creek Community Church, 600 Stevens Creek Road, Martinez.

The performance will feature a guest performance by the Brass Ensemble of First Baptist Church of North Augusta.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Admission is free for first responders, fire, police, military, Emergency medical technicians, Red Cross workers and other emergency service personnel with badge or identification. Boy scout troop meeting changed

Boy Scout Troop 16 now will meet at 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. on Mondays at the Church of Our Savior on Columbia Road.

Children's chorale holding dessert concert

The Augusta Children's Chorale will hold its 12th annual Just Desserts Concert at 7 p.m.Thursday, at Sacred Heart Cultural Center.

The chorale is made up of 78 children ages 8-14 from five counties and 35 schools throughout the CSRA.

Tickets for the concert, directed by Linda Leslie Bradberry, cost is $10 and includes the concert and dessert. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling the chorale office at 826-4718.

Newcomers welcome newcomers

The Augusta Newcomers Club helps new residents acclimate and make friends by offering a variety of activities including lunch and dinner groups, social activities, bowling, golf, book clubs and more.

Monthly coffees for prospective new members are on the first Tuesday of each month with the next Wednesday.

Salvation Army accepting Christmas assistance applications

The Salvation Army will be taking applications for Christmas assistance beginning Monday and lasting through Friday. Applications will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on each of the designated day.

Homeless and low-income families will be provided with toys, gifts and food for their children.

Families needing Christmas assistance must apply in person at the Salvation Army's social service center, 1384 Greene St. Applicants must provide photo identification, Social Security cards for all family members and proof of income and expenses to qualify.

The Department of Family and Children Services is looking for dedicated and committed families to be foster or adoptive families for abused and neglected children.

The need is great and the work is challenging.

If you want to supply the tools, materials, time and devotion it takes to be a foster or adoptive parents or just want more information, contact your local department.

House numbers

The Columbia County Planning and Development office is encouraging residents to ensure that their homes have their street address numbers plainly visible from the street so that emergency personnel can find the correct address.

House numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, mounted on a mailbox, be visible from both directions of the road and should not be hidden by weeds or flowers.

Head Start

CSRA EOA Inc. Head Start has openings for children who will be age 4 by Dec. 31, 2002. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that provides quality services for the whole family. All services are provided in an educational environment and are free to qualified applicants. The National Kidney Foundation of Georgia is seeking donations of old vehicles to be sold as a fund-raiser.

Volunteers needed

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for volunteers age 21 and older to help advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.

Volunteers work alongside the Department of Family and Children Services and other agencies to protect children who have been placed in foster care. Volunteers need no experience and will be provided specialized training. For more information, call 737-4631.

Historical donations needed

The Grovetown Museum Board of Directors is seeking donations of military memorabilia with ties to Fort (Camp) Gordon for a special display depicting the historical relationship between the fort and Grovetown.

Moldovan bishop to speak at Macedonia UMC

Valeriu Ghiletchi, bishop of the Union of Christian Evangelical Baptist Churches of Moldova, will preach during the 11 a.m. worship service at Macedonia United Methodist Church on Sunday.

Ghiletchi, who lost a bid for reelection to the Moldovan parliament in 2001, currently serves the 400 Baptist churches in Moldova. He is an assistant pastor of Christ the Savior Baptist Church in Chisinau, Moldova, and the founder of the College of Theology and Education of Moldova.

Macedonia United Methodist is near the Interstate 20 exit to Camak. From Thomson, travel out Cedar Rock Road about seven miles. The Church is just beyond the intersection with Georgia Highway 80 North. From Warrenton, travel through Camak on Georgia Highway 80 North just beyond the I-20 intersection.
