With a graded lot in the background, Columbia County's commissioners stuck several gold shovels in the red clay last week to officially launch construction of an Evans Government Complex addition.

Ground has been broken for the addition to the Evans Government Complex. Officials hope to be in the $2 million, 23,000-square-foot building by next year.

"This is a great expansion," Commission Chairman Jim Whitehead said .

Officials hope to move into Building C next October. The $2-million, 23,000-square-foot building will be built on property behind the Evans Government Complex, located on Ronald Reagan Drive off Washington Road.

The building will be paid for using proceeds from the county's Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax.

"As a commission, we think sales tax is a great way to do it," Whitehead said.

Once completed, Building C will house the offices of the tax commissioner, tax assessor, finance department and information technologies.

Officials hope moving those department from Appling and the existing Evans Government Complex building will help make things easier for taxpayers and less crowded for county employees.

"This is something that has been needed for a long time," Whitehead said.
