Benefit blood drive

Evans High School will hold a blood drive from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the school's commons area to benefit Adam Allen, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.

"We're trying to help out," Evans baseball coach Ricky Beale said of Allen, who is a member of the Evans junior varsity baseball team. "The drive will help with the chemotherapy treatments and blood transfusions he'll have to go through the next few months."

Brookwood Elementary play

Second-graders from Brookwood Elementary School, Grovetown, will perform the musical Bugz at 1:45, 2:30 and 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school at 455 S. Old Belair Road.

Block grant hearing

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is holding a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Columbia County Government Complex. At the meeting, sheriff's office representatives will be making recommendations and taking suggestions from the public on ways to use the funds from a U.S. Department of Justice Law Enforcement Block Grant.

Gardening at lunch

The Columbia County Extension Service is holding a lunch seminar from 12:10 to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Government Complex auditorium. The topic is fall lawn care presented by Charles Phillips, a county extension agent.

The seminar is free and open to the public, but does not provide lunch.

Advertising meeting

Rich Wakefield, senior vice president and group creative director of BBDO in Atlanta, will be the guest speaker at the October meeting of the Augusta Advertising Federation. The meeting will be at noon Thursday, at the Partridge Inn. Admission is $20 and $5 for students. PFor reservations, call Tasha Alison, at (706) 724-3758, Ext. 206.

Octoberfest

The Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring Octoberfest from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post No. 192, Evans.

Dinners will be $5 per plate and take-out orders will be available. Feel free to bring a German dish to share.

Swingin' Medallions concert

The Swingin' Medallions will perform at the Oliver Hardy Festival Dance at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Harlem High School football field.

Tickets cost $7.50 and are on sale at the following locations: Harlem City Hall, Regions Bank locations in Harlem Appling and Grovetown, Watts Service Station, BG's Deli and First National Bank and Trust in Grovetown.

Lt. Governor Mark Taylor will be at the Columbia County Democratic Party Headquarters this Sunday at 3 p.m. for a ribbon cutting ceremony. The headquarters is located at 4001 Washington Rd. This is the former Emerald Sea and Dive Shop (across from Blockbuster Videos).
