Club Car Inc. has been a well-known industryin Columbia County for years, but during this weekend's 34th Ryder Cup Matches in Sutton Coldfield, England, the local company had to prove themselves on an international stage.

An official sponsor of this year's Ryder Cup, Club Car provided more than 150 carts for various uses at the prestigious tournament.

"This event gives Club Car worldwide exposure, which will hopefully translate into more business and more work for the local area," said Mike Read who is in advertising and promotions at Club Car.

The flags and other decorations on the Ryder Cup cars were painted by Augusta artist Brian Stewart, a graduate of Evans High School.

While gaining international recognition, Club Car has maintained strong ties to the local community.

In 1962 William Stevens Sr., purchased the company and brought it to Columbia County. The company currently employees approximately 1,200 associates at its 4125 Washington Road facility.

March 9, 2001 was declared Club Car Day in Richmond and Columbia counties by Mayor Bob Young and Columbia County Commission Chairman Barry Fleming as the 1 millionth golf car rolled off the assembly line.

Also, during 2001, Club Car received numerous awards for its contributions to the community. The first Augusta Metro-Columbia County Clean and Beautiful award was present to the company in recognition for its contributions to the beautification of the county.

Club Car also received awards from the Augusta-Metro and Columbia County chamber of commerces ranging from community involvement to workforce education in recognition of its community involvement

"Though an international company, Club Car takes great pride in the communities in which it is in," Read said. "In the end it's the people that have made the company what it is today. The fact that Club Car is at the Ryder Cup is a direct result of the people and their efforts."
