Special

The Sept. 11 project of a local Girl Scout Brownie troop has resulted in the gift of more than 60 stuffed animals to the Martinez Fire Department.

The Brownies and Daisies of West Augusta Troop 707 of the Girl Scouts, Central Savannah River Council, presented the teddy bears and other animals to Chief Doug Cooper at fire department headquarters about noon Sept. 11.

The approximately 40 girls, ranging in ages from 5 to9, began collecting the toys more than a month ago. Troop leaders chose the project, but the girls did all the work, and many of them donated their own beloved stuffed animals. All of the Troop 707 members are home-schooled and they come from all over the Augusta area.

Martinez firefighters will carry the stuffed animals on their trucks and distribute them to comfort children at fires and other disaster scenes.
