Cleanup Challenge Day
Columbia County Clean and Beautiful committee, along with Metro Augusta Clean and Beautiful, is sponsoring Cleanup Celebration Day on Oct. 12.
In the cleanup day, the committees from both counties ask the public to help keep the area clean by not littering, picking up litter they may see and identifyingroads or areas that need attention. The committee is aware of several roads that have been identified as needing extra cleanup attention and are looking to identify more.

The Swingin' Medallions will perform at the Oliver Hardy Festival Dance at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 the Festival at the Harlem High School football field.

Brookwood second-graders hit the stage
Second-graders from Brookwood Elementary School, Grovetown, will perform the musical Bugz at 1:45, 2:30 and 7 p.m. Oct 1 at the school at 455 S. Old Belair Rd.
The musical, with costumes, lighting effects, and an orchestrated soundtrack, is about bugs holding a picnic. Ladybugs, fireflies, army ants and bumblebees organize a picnic only to find out the stinkbugs want to come, too.

Ms. Senior Georgia-Carolina Pageant scheduled
The sixth annual Ms. Senior Georgia-Carolina Pageant will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Augusta State University Performing Arts Theater. Contestants will compete in evening gown, judges' interview, talent and philosophy of life categories.
The mission of the pageant is to promote positive aging and to show active, dynamic, older women in the CSRA in a way to encourage other seniors.

Potluck dinner planned

Fall camp set

Red Cross offering instructor training
The Augusta Red Cross will offer the first aid/CPR/AED instructor course from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 16-19. Course prerequisites include basic adult, infant and child CPR and first aid.

Family bicycle tour of Harlem
The Oliver Hardy Festival and the Columbia County West Rotary Club will hold a family bicycle tour of Harlem on Oct. 5.
The metric century (65 miles) starts at 8:45 a.m. for serious riders. Other riders begin at 11 a.m. for an optional 10- or 20-mile family ride. Both begin by meeting at the Woman's Club in Harlem.

Family History Series studies love with cars
The Augusta Museum of History will present its September Family History Series, which will feature a special program by Michael Lasser at 1 p.m. Sept. 21.
The program, Automobubbling You and I: What Songs Tell Us About Our Love Affair with Cars, and What Our Love Affair with Cars Tells Us About Ourselves, combines an informative lecture with popular American music.

Vintage car show set
The Augusta Museum of History will present a Model A Antique Automobile Show on Sept. 21-22 at the museum at 560 Reynolds St.
The show will feature the Shade Tree A's, a local Model A club, who will display more than 60 Model A vehicles throughout the weekend.

Combined Federal Campaign kicks off
The Combined Federal Campaign, a fund-raising campaign within the federal sector, will hold its Interagency Kickoff at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Gordon's Alexander Hall. The public is invited.
The campaign raised over $6,000 last year in support of human health and welfare organizations.

Girls Scouts to bake, deliver treats
Girls Scout Group 783, from North Columbia Elementary School, will bake homemade treats in the kitchen of Fetch Dog Treats from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 17 for the animals at Columbia County Animal Car and Control.
Fetch Dog Treats, 1944 Walton Way, Augusta, bakes and sells dog treats using natural ingredients. The project will help the girls earn their community service merit badge and provide healthy treats for the animals at the shelter.
The scouts will deliver the goodies to the animals at 10 a.m. Sept. 21.

Spaghetti supper fund-raiser planned
The annual Columbia County Cares Family Spaghetti Supper will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19, at Marvin United Methodist Church gymnasium at the corner of Belair and Wheeler roads.

The Columbia County Planning and Development office is encouraging residents to ensure that their homes have their street address numbers plainly visible from the street so that emergency personnel can find the correct address.
House numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, mounted on a mailbox, be visible from both directions of the road and should not be hidden by weeds or flowers.

The Vineyard Preschool and Mothers Morning Out Program is now accepting registration for the fall 2002 school year program.

Volunteers needed
The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for volunteers age 21 and older to help advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.
