Sept. 11 Remembrance Services Across Columbia County
* Columbia County government will hold a ceremony beginning at 8:46 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the Columbia County Justice Center and Courthouse Annex on Ronald Reagan Drive. The short program will include God Bless America, the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.
* A community service called Remembering Our Sorrow, Proclaiming Our Hope, will be at 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church at 825 N. Belair Road. The program will include an original musical composition, liturgy, hymns, scripture readings, county government officials, and the Martinez Fire Department Honor Guard.
* Five of seven Martinez Fire Department companies will honor lost firefighters with a flag flying half-staff while sirens sound.Firefighters then will observe a moment of silence at 10:05 and 10:28 a.m., the times each of the two World Trade Center towers collapsed. At Engine Co. 1, headquarters, the names of all 343 firefighters killed in New York will be read between the siren sounds.
* Flags will be retired by the American Legion Post 63 Honor Guard for Retirement of Unserviceable Flags will be placed in the parking lot of the Evans Wal-Mart on Washington Road at 5:30 p.m. Veterans will have special seating. The event will include a Boy Scout troop, high school ROTC and soldiers from Fort Gordon. Cake and punch will be served afterward.
* Harlem Baptist Church is having a 9-11 Memorial Service Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. The service will include special music, prayers, a message, candle lighting and more. The service is open to the public and child care will be provided.
* The Church of the Holy Comforter will have a special service at noon Sept. 11 at their offices at 3604-A Wheeler Road. Relics from the World Trade Center given to church members who worked atground zero will be on display.
* The Islamic Society of Augusta will play host to an hour of prayer in remembrance of the victims of Sept. 11 on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
