The Watson-Brown Foundation Board of Trustees recently awarded more than 337 college scholarships, representing a financial commitment of about $1 million.

"This year's pool of applicants was large and particularly impressive," said Executive Director Mary Anne Coussons. "Scholastically speaking, the increased competition raised the bar."

The 98 new scholars scored an average of 1310 n the SAT and had a mean GPA of 3.6. the 239 renewal scholarship recipients scored a mean college GPA of 3.4. Twenty-five of the new recipients are from Columbia and Richmond Counties, as well as areas surrounding McDuffie County.

The Watson-Brown Foundation was created by the late Walter J. Brown primarily as a scholarship program. More than 1,2000 students have attended college over the past 32 years with foundation assistance.
