Student earns degree

Sally Capers Metzel, daughter of Albert and Sally Metzel of Augusta, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Richmond in May with a bachelor of arts degree. She majored in theater.

Dean's List

Jodi Emanuele of Martinez was named to the Dean's List at Liberty University. Emanuele was one of 1210 students who earned this recognition for the spring.

Graduation

Richard B. Johnson, son of Sandra K. and Richard W. Johnson, graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in May.

Graduation

Lauren Davi Paul, daughter of Marilyn and Joe Paul, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors in Business Administration and a Master's in Accounting.

Scholarship

Andy Lines of Martinez was awarded a $1000 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship in recognition of his commitment to personal and professional excellence.

Dean's List

Lauren Ashley Massey of Augusta was among 383 students placed on the President's List and Dean's List at Presbyterian College for the spring semester.

Small Business Summit

Lee Muns, owner of Muns Welding and Mechanical, Inc., was named delegate to the 2002 National Small Business Summit in Washington, D.C. Dean's List Scott A. Villemain, son of Dale and Melanie Villemain of Martinez, was named to the Dean's List at the University of Georgia for the spring semester.

Paralympics

Chris Malcom, son of Clarence and Karen Malcom of Evans, has been ranked # 1 wheelchair athlete in his division by the U. S. Paralympic Committee. He will be competing in the 2002 IPC World Chmpionships in France this July.

Dean's List

P. Morgan Dominy, son of Phillip and Rosa Dominy of Evans, was named to the Dean's List at the University of Georgia for the spring semester.

Graduation

James Mitchell Allmond, son of Karen Mitchell Hill and Don Allmond, graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Physics. He plans to attend Georgia Tech's School of Physics Ph.D. program.

Winners of Contest

The College Hill Chapter, NSDAR, announces the winners of its Columbia County youth contests for the 2001-2002 school year. Corrie Navarro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Navarro, won the Good Citizen Award and the North East Georgia Competition.

The Eighth Grade American History Essay Contest winner is Jennifer Stroud, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Stroud. The Seventh Grade American History Essay Contest winner is Caitlin King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolphus King.

Ensign Monica Hurley, daughter of Matt and Ruth Hurley of Evans, gaduated from the United States Naval Academy with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the Navy.

Scholars Katrina Diane Duffy of Grovetown was named a Texas Christian University Scholar.

John's Award

The prestigious 'John's Award' for Outstanding Student Citizenship was presented at Evans Elementary to Hannah Wigington, daughter of Will and Debra Wigington of Evans, and Charles Videna, son of Celistina and Rebecca Videna of Evans. The annual award was presented by the Columbia County West Rotary Club.

American Teen

Alexa Rebeck, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rebeck, is going to compete to be Miss Georgia American Teen 2002 in Alpharetta this September. She won the Miss CSRA, Miss Petite Augusta, and Miss Seen Burst Beauty Pageant in order to compete. She is a rising junior at Harlem High School.

Kileigh E. Easler, daughter of Bill and Jackie Easler and Clyde and Rhonda Newman, was named to the Dean's List at Georgia Southern University's School of Nursing.

Georgia College and State University recognized the following students at Honors Day. Patrick McKeown of Evans was recognized as an Omnicron Delta Kappa Society initiate. Leslee Register of Evans was recognized as an Outstanding Department Major, Government and Sociology. Margaret Rountree of Evans was recognized as an Alpha Lambda Delta initiate and Lance Family and Sara Watson Puckett scholarships recipient. Elizabeth Brandenburg of Martinez was recognized as an Alpha Lambda Delta initiate and Honors Program participant. Lisa Haywood of Martinez was recognized as a Phi Kappa Phi initiate. Bethany Loushine was recognized as a Patricia Jo Samprone Memorial Scholarship recipient.

All-American Scholar

Matthew Miller, son of Jim and Judy Miller of Grovetown, has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. He is a student at Harlem High School.

Oxford study

Lisa Marie Drabiak has been accepted and is presently studying in the summer program at Oxford University in Oxford, England. She is a senior at the Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in chemical engineering. Lisa is a 1999 graduate of Lakeside High School and the daughter of Maria and Anthony Drabiak of Martinez.

ASU Dean's list

Allison Rebecca Popplewell of Appling has been named to the Dean's list for the 2002 spring semester at Augusta State University. Allison is a 2001 graduate of Augusta Christian Schools and she is the daughter of Mike and Christie Popplewell of Appling.

NU Dean's list

Andrew Rosen of Martinez has been named to the Dean's list at Northeastern University for the 2002 spring quarter.

GCSU Dean's list

Katherine Beale Jones of Martinez has been named to the Dean's list at Georgia College and State University for the 2002 spring semester. Katherine is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Jones, Jr. of Martinez.

JROTC Cadet Award

Michael Rivera of Evans has received the top Advance Course Cadet Award at the Georiga summer JROTC camp held at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Michael is a student at Evans High School and the son of Dr. (Colonel) and Mrs. David Rivera of Evans.

GT graduate

Erin Miller, daughter of Cliff and Carol Miller of Evans, graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology on May 4, 2002, with a B.S. degree in Industrial Design. Erin is employed as a project manager with Ermcar, Inc.

State Finalist

Brittany Coughlin of Martinez has been chosen as a State Finalist in the Miss Georgia American Pre-teen Pageant to be held August 30, 2002, to September 1, 2002. Brittany is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Coughlin.

Loyola Dean's list

Christopher Ingham of Evans has been named to the Dean's list for the 2002 spring semester at Loyola University in New Orleans.

Berry College Dean's list

Kim Miller, daughter of Cliff and Carol Miller of Evans, has received a 4.0 for the spring semester at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.

Harvard graduate

Brent Fancher Powell graduated on June 6, 2002 cum laude from Harvard Law School. Brent is a 1995 graduate of Evans High School and has received the degree of Juris Doctor. Brent plans to join the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Joey and Cecelia Powell of North Augusta.

Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. John R. Howard, Sr. were married July 6, 1952. They celebrated the occasion with a reception held June 29, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of Augusta. The reception was given by their children, Patricia H. Hunter, Jan H. Lamb and John R. Howard, Jr. Joining them were their grandchildren and great-granddaughter along with many other family and friends.

Youth Medicine Participant

Mary Catherine Burdine of Palos Verdes Estates, CA, was accepted to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Boston from July 21 to July 30. Burdine is the granddaughter of Betty Dorminey of Evans and the daughter of Pam Dorminey Sutterfield of Palos Verdes Estates.

AASU graduates

Kathleen Winger of Augusta and John Parham of Evans graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah May 11, 2002. Winger earned a Master of Health Services Administration and Parham earned a Master of Health Services Administration.

NU Dean's List

Andrew Rosen of Martinez has been named to the Dean's list at Northeastern University in Boston for the 2002 spring quarter. Rosen is a computer science major.

Soldier temporarily stationed

Jason Jones, a 1998 graduate of Evans High School, is temporarily working with recruiters of the Army recruiting station in Spring Lake, NC. He enlisted in the Army in January, 2002 and his occupational specialty is a Supply Sergeant Specialist. He is the husband of Specialist Andrea Jones.

National Dean's List

Northal L. Gaddy, II, a co-op student at South Georgia Technical College and Georgia Southwestern University has been selected to receive the National Dean's List Honorary Award for 2001-2002 honoring America's outstanding college students. Northal is a 2001 graduate of Evans High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Northal L. Gaddy of Martinez.

UGA Dean's List

Nicole Allison Pierce, daughter of Phil and Bonnie Pierce, was named to the spring semester dean's list at the University of Georgia. She was selected for membership to the Delta Epsilon Iota Honor Society and received a academic scholarship from Georgia Government Financing for her work at the Athens-Clarke County Finance Department. Pierce is a 1999 graduate of Evans High School and will graduate in December.

Harvard graduate

Brent Fancher Powell graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School with the degree of Juris Doctor on June 6, 2002. After sitting for the bar, Powell will join the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. Powell is a 1995 graduate of Evans High School and the son of Joey and Cecelia Powell of North Augusta.

Scott I. Beveridge graduated from Dartmouth College June 9, 2002. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Beveridge is the son of Kristina and Wayne Beveridge of Augusta.
