Voter registration

Monday is the last day citizens can register to be eligible to vote in the August 20 primary election.

Eligible Georgia citizens who have not yet registered may do so in a variety of ways. State drivers license facilities, county and municipal voter registration offices, WIC and DFACS offices and public libraries have voter registration applications available. On the Web, Georgians may download and print an application, or complete their application using an electronic template, on the Secretary of State1s website at www.sos.state.ga.us/elections.

The applications must be printed, signed and mailed to the Secretary of State, and all applications must be postmarked no later than July 22nd.

Registered voters who are 75 or older, disabled, who will be out of their precinct from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day, or who meet other statutory requirements may submit an application for an absentee ballot to their county voter registrar.

First Responder Course

Gold Cross Emergency Medical Services will be holding a 60-hour First Responder Course. The course will run from July 22 until August 27. The first class will be held at the Appling Fire Department in Appling starting at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in attending this class, please contact Capt. Sandra Culver at Gold Cross. Feline extravaganza

The Columbia County Humane Society is sponsoring a Feline Extravaganza on Thursday, July 25th at Petsmart in Augusta from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The CCHS volunteers have recently rescued many cats and kittens that are looking for loving homes. These feline extravaganzas are in addition to the regularly scheduled adoptions on Saturdays (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Sundays (1 p.m.-4 p.m.)

Telephone book recycling

Telephone book recycling containers have been placed at the following locations in Columbia County: Savannah Rapids Pavilion, Evans to Lock Road, Evans, Parking lot of North Wing of the Evans Government Complex, The Water Works Parking lot near exit sign on 4235 Evans to Lock Road, Columbia County Landfill, 590 Baker Place Road, Grovetown, Roads & Bridges Parking lot on 2257 County Camp Road, Appling, and the Grovetown and Harlem city halls.

School councils meet

The South Columbia Elementary School Council will meet on July 24, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the media center of the school.

Also, the Riverside Middle School Council will meet on July 23 at 8 a.m. in the Media Center of the school.

Also, the 2002-2003 School Council of Blue Ridge Elementary School will hold a meeting on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the conference room in the media center.
