Soap-box racer
Kip Custer, 10, is already driving to victory behind the wheel of a car that he helped build. The Martinez resident will be racing against competitors from around the world at the 65th All-American Soap Box Derby on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28 in Akron, Ohio.
In addition to the race, Custer will meet other racers at Derbytown, a camp for all of the competitors.
Those wanting to make donations for Custer's trip can send checks to Augusta Soapbox Derby, c/o Kip Custer, P.O. Box 204074, Martinez, Ga. 30907.
The donations are tax deductible and will be taken until Thursday, July 18.
Bragg earns trophy
A rising Evans High School junior earned some bragging right at the Georgia Women's Open, which was held earlier this month in Newnan.
Kristen Bragg fired rounds of 83-77 at Canongate-on-White Oak Golf Club, and her 160 total placed first in the second flight. As a sophomore at Evans, Bragg was named the Most Valuable Player on the golf team for the 2002 campaign.
Swimming tryouts
Aiken-Augusta Swim League, a year-round, non-profit swim team, will be holding a tryout session for the 2002-03 season. Swimmers must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke in order to try out. The tryouts will be at Augusta State University, July 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. for 10-year-old and younger swimmers, and 7 to 8 p.m. for swimmers 11 years old and above. Evans football
Evans High School football coach Lee Chomskis and his staff will be issuing practice equipment for the Knights football team this week. Players are asked to report to the high school and pick up their gear at the following times: Monday, 7 p.m. - seniors; Tuesday, 7 p.m. - juniors; Wednesday, 7 p.m. - sophomores; Thursday, 7 p.m. - freshmen.
Basketball camp
The Bulldog Basketball Camp is this week at the Harlem High School gymnasium. The camp is for rising eighth-through-12th-graders, and the cost is $75. For more information, call Kim Chambers at 868-6897.
