Officer quits; deputy arrested
The investigation of a Grovetown Public Safety officer concluded the same day a warrant was filed on a Columbia County Sheriff's Department deputy.

Sister city delegates tour county facilities
A group of 10 delegates from Nowy Sacz, , Poland, are touring the hospitals, schools and public safety facilities in Columbia County. They are part of the Sister City program that is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Cooling centers open to provide heat relief
As the temperature rises, two cooling centers in the county have been opened for those at high risk to the summer heat.

Events set for Fourth
The Fourth of July Celebration at Patriots Park begins at 3 p.m. Thursday. There'll be arts and crafts, hot air balloon rides, a petting zoo, clowns, a silent auction a performance by the band Shiloh and fireworks. For information, call 868-3458. There is no charge for the event.

Pieces of history
In 1790, Peter Crawford was a pretty important figure in Columbia County. The county was formed that year, and Crawford became the county's first clerk of Inferior and Superior Courts. In 1830, he died in office as a state senator.

Paper captures 22 awards
The Columbia County News-Times won 22 state journalism awards, including six first-place honors for work done in 2001, it was announced Friday at the annual convention of the Georgia Press Association.
