Dave Crowley traveled to Hiawassee earlier this month, and he didn't head for the hills just to take a leisurely vacation in the north Georgia Mountains.

The Martinez resident was testing his endurance in triathlon and ironman triathlon events on June 1 and 2.

Despite challenging courses, and unseasonable heat and humidity, Crowley recorded high finishes in both events.

In the fifth Annual Chatuge Challenge Sprint Triathlon, Crowley posted a time of 59 minutes, 27 seconds to place second in the 40-44 age group. Of the 150 competitors in all age divisions, Crowley was 10th overall.

The triathlon featured a half-mile swim; 10-mile bike ride; and a 3.1-mile run.

Crowley added a third place 40-44 age group in the second annual Chatuge Challenge 1/2 Ironman Triathlon. Crowley's stamina was tested with a 1.2 mile swim; 56-mile bike ride; and 13.1-mile run. He finished with a time of 5 hours, 36 minutes and 13 seconds, and was 25th overall in the full-field of 140 competitors.

The races were sponsored by the Great Smoky Mountains Triathlon Club.
