Water Control Ordinance Enacted

Delinquent taxes and a new contract with University Hospital evoked responses from the audience at the Martinez meeting of the Columbia County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night.

Because of a resolution passed recently by the State Department of Education, funds can be withheld from local educational agencies if 1977 county year digest and 1977 school millage if not used by Decemeber 15. Notification to the Board was in the form of a copy of a letter to the superintendent of schools.

County Unemployment Drops

AUGUSTA-Columbia County's unemployment rate declined by six tenths of a percent in April, from 9.5 in March to 8.9, according to figures released by the Georgia Department of Labor.

"The shrinking unemployment rate is excellent news," said Labor Commissioner Sam Caldwell, in announcing a statewide April rate of 63 percent. (March was 6.7; February 7.4 percent).

"It's encouraging, too, to see employment grow."

Burcole Ranch hosts Field Day

Approximately 475 polled heifer breeders from across the nation participated in this year's Georgia Polled Heifers Association Field Day Saturday, June 18 at Burcole Ranch, located between Grovetown and Evans.

Mrs. Stanley Coley, co-owner of the 400-acre ranch, said of the Field Day:"It's an annual gathering of polled heifer breeders with the program centered around items of interest to cattlemen."

The event consisted of junior and senior heifer shows, the crowning of the new Miss Georgia Polled Heifer Queen, heifer judging contests, speeches and a tour of the Burcole Embryo Center.
