Cotton transfer approved

Cotton grower in Columbia County have approved the ale or lease of 1969 Upland Cotton allotments out of the county, according to ASCS. Voting on the question took place in a mail referendum during the period May 13 through May 17.

The transfers were approved by 60 percent of the producers voting. A two-thirds affirmative action vote was required to make the provision effective.

Local War Hero honored

Lee Hood Jr., of Rt. 1 Harlem, was awarded the Air Medal for heroism while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam.

Specialist Four Hood distinguished himself on March 24, 1968, while serving as a door gunner with Company A, 9th Aviation Batt. When the western side of the base came under intense mortar and automatic weapons fire from a nearby woodline, Hood immediately rushed to his landed helicopter and delivered an extremely accurate volume of machine gun fire on the insurgent positions, enabling the helicopter to be piloted out of the line of fire.

Students recognized

Members of the Senior Class of the Harlem High School, who area also members of the Harlem Baptist Church, were recognized during the regular Sunday morning worship service, May 26.

Mr. Howard Hardy, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, congratulated the students and presented a Bible to each one on behalf of the church.

The students were Brenda Burroughs, Cindy Butler, Elaine Byrd, Faye Cook, Kaye Cook, Bill Griffin, Lynda Kay, Nick Odom, Mark White and Dennis Whitfield.
