The Lakeside High School golf team returned to the Region 3-AAAA throne last week at Waynesboro Country Club, where the Panthers shot a team score of 311 to beat runner-up Thomson by three strokes.
After a string of region championships, plus a state title in 1999, Lakeside had placed third at region last season.
Lakeside's resurgence was paced by freshman Ryan Blackburn, who fired a 73 Tuesday to capture region medalist honors. Marie Sconyers posted a 93 for the Lady Panthers, and Lauren Stephen added a 99, as the Lakeside girls placed second at region to earn a berth in the Class AAAA state tournament.
In the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class AAA tournament, the Augusta Preparatory Day School golf team fired an impressive team score of 299, but Deerfield-Windsor shot a state-record 296 to edge the Cavaliers Monday in Albany.
Augusta Prep was led by Paul Trotter's 71, which was good for second place in the state individual standings at Stonebridge Country Club. The Cavs close the 2002 season this weekend in the Southern Cross Invitational at Aiken's Palmetto Golf Club.
The Lakeside boys and girls team will compete in the Class AAAA state tournament at Forest Hills Golf Club on May 13. Lakeside is the host school for the event.
