One word describes the performance of two Columbia County high school teams last week: dominating.

The Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack won the Region 3-AAAA track and field championship by a wide margin at Burke County High School. Greenbrier forged a 12 point lead in Monday's opening action, then earned its first region track title with a solid finish on Tuesday.

The Augusta Preparatory Day School golf team did its thing Monday in Sandersville, where the Cavaliers cruised to their fourth straight Region 4-AAA crown.

Freshman Alex Abate fired a 70 to claim region medalist honors and lead Prep to a 23-shot victory over runner-up John Milledge Academy.

Augusta Prep now takes aim at the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class AAA title. The squad travels to Albany today to begin preparations for the state tournament, which will be held Monday at Double Gate Country Club.

Greenbrier will send several athletes to the Class AAAA state track and field championships this week in Albany, including seniors Lindsey Sutherland and Becky Martin.

Sutherland placed first in shotput and 100-meter hurdles, while Martin won the pole vault event. Other winners for the Lady Pack were Tesha Thurmond (discus) and Samantha Hardy (3,200 meter).

Greenbrier had handily beaten all its region foes during the regular season, but with second place finishes at region two of the last three years, the Lady Pack didn't celebrate until finally claiming the trophy.

"Lindsey comes and jumps on top of me, and we fell to the ground hugging and crying," Martin said. "This was the first time we'd won region. We were all really emotional."
